How to continue an AI chat in a new thread

Long conversations drift. The assistant forgets the early details, replies slow down, and you start repeating yourself. A fresh thread helps, if you bring the right context with you.

Why long chats degrade

Every assistant has a limit on how much of the conversation it can hold in view at once. As a thread grows, early messages get less attention or fall out entirely. The symptoms are familiar: contradicted decisions, forgotten constraints, answers that ignore something you said an hour ago.

The manual way

  1. Ask the assistant to write a short brief of the conversation: the goal, the decisions made, the constraints, and what is still open.
  2. Read it and fix anything wrong.
  3. Open a new chat and paste the brief as your first message, followed by your next question.

It works well, as long as you do it before the thread gets too tangled to summarise.

The faster way

If you save your chats as you go, you can reopen any saved conversation and pick up exactly where you left off in a fresh thread, with the context already assembled. Stash does this from the pill on the chat, and it can also pull a related past conversation into your prompt as context, so the new thread starts informed.
